The Minnesota Historical Society's website has many great features. I have blogged about some of these. Scroll down the right side of this blog to see the index to past posts.

One of the important sections is "Preserve Your Family Treasures" which I have found to be quite helpful. The topics discussed are oral histories, letters and papers, organizing family papers, photographs, metals, and textiles.

While I watch the Super Bowl

I will do it today. I will reach into a drawer filled with file folders I haven't looked at in a while. These are files related to my Stuart ancestry. It's time to get back to some research on them. They arrived in the U.S. from Scotland in 1852 and as you may have read before, they settled in the area of Fond du Lac and Winnebago counties of Wisconsin.

I will sort, relabel, and even toss some pieces of paper and likely find much to scan and to enter into the Master Genealogist. What is my impetus for all this?

Fire destroys house in Utah, but genealogy materials preserved

I regularly read the Salt Lake Tribune online and today was catching up on some of that reading and saw this amazing story. A home in Wellsville, Utah was almost completely destroyed by a fire. Such a scary thought for anyone and for a genealogist with decades of family history materials the word fire strikes terror. This is a story that is different.

The article state, "Matt Leishman said he was surprised to go through the rubble of his parents’ home Monday afternoon and find one room that was virtually untouched — the one containing many years’ worth of his mother’s family genealogical records. The family was able to fully recover all the documents related to the family history, although some were soaked with water."
